Mass Appeal!

As the most anticipated title of 2010’s release draws near we take a look at what to expect from Bioware’s follow up to one of the best games of all time.

Mass Effect took what Bioware had created in Kinghts of the Old Republic and built on it in every way. The space based RPG/Shooter redefined the genre with stunning visuals, immersive storyline and massive action.

Mass Effect 2 promises to expand and improve every aspect of the original. It certainly has us all biting our nails waiting for the January 29th release date.

There will be lots of new gaming elements to Mass Effect 2 so here I will go over a few of them. You once again find yourself in the role of Commander Shepard, I am unsure whether the saved version of Shepard (Who looks very different to the original one.) in my save game from the original will be ported over.

As in the first game you will need to assemble a crew of characters but it seems that in Mass Effect 2 the crew you chose will have much more of an effect on how the story pans out and what your survival chances are.

Interestingly the squad you assemble will have a direct baring on how successful the overall mission is when you embark on the story to find out why humans are vanishing from the galaxy. It will depend on how loyal your crew are as to how well they will perform on the mission.

“The Mass Effect trilogy is an epic saga with consequences that will carry through from chapter to chapter” said Dr. Ray Muzyka, GM and CEO BioWare, VP EA. “Building out a diverse and loyal party is one of the features that makes the Mass Effect series unique. “The characters Commander Shepard recruits are not only pivotal to the storyline but essential to the players overall success.”

The new character revealed in the Mass Effect 2 squad is ‘Grunt’. A violent and unpredictable Krogan fighter, Grunt has never faced true defeat. His unsurpassed physical strength makes him a strong asset to Commander Shepard’s team, if he can be tamed, and if he can be trusted.

Some new characters feature ‘Subject Zero’ a formidable biotic, ‘Thane’, a deadly assassin and ‘Grunt’, an unpredictable Krogan. All of which already sound like they could have a huge bearing on how the game unfolds.

One of the things that made Mass Effect 1 so engaging was the quality of the script and the excellent voice acting and in ME2 Bioware have gone all out on the vocal cast.  Martin Sheen stars as the mysterious Illusive Man who commands Cerberus, a secretive paramilitary organization dedicated to protecting human interests in the galaxy. Yvonne Strahovski plays deadly Cerberus operative Miranda Lawson, who has been genetically engineered for superior mental and physical traits. Returning to the cast from the original Mass Effect is Seth Green as Joker and Keith David as Admiral David Anderson. And rounding out the vocal roster are Tricia Helfer as EDI, the voice of the new Normandy; Carrie-Ann Moss as Aria T’Loak, the crime lord who rules the planet Omega; Shohreh Aghdashloo as Admiral Shala’Raan vas Tonbay; Michael Hogan as Captain Bailey; Adam Baldwin as Kal ‘Reegar; and Michael Dorn (Warf from Star Trek.) as Gatatog Uvenk and Mark Meer will reprise his role as Commander Shepard himself.

The game will, as is the case now for most games come in a standard edition or a special Collectors’ featuring a tin case and includes the full version of the game, a 48-page hardcover “Art of Mass Effect 2” book, Issue 1 of the Mass Effect Redemption comic book, and a bonus DVD with behind-the-scenes and making-of videos. In addition, the Mass Effect 2 Collectors’ Edition will include unique in-game weapons and armor that can only be obtained by purchasing this version. At least the Special Edition actually has some merit to it. Unfortunately this would seem to be a PC only edition so hard luck for Xbox users!

All-in-all Mass Effect 2 is one that we really can’t wait for and we will be bringing you a full review as soon as we get out mitts on it!! However, as if you weren’t already eager enough, feast your eyes on these gorgeous screens!
