Sonic is Back!!

Sega has announced the release of a new Sonic game and yes it has Sonic back to his 2D best. Sonic 4: Episode 1 certainly looks like a polished version of the original sonic games and will be available on XBL/PSN & Wii Ware. It is good to see Sonic back in the dimension that truly works for him and I hope that this is a sign of things to come. Apart from a few exceptions platformers just work better in 2D and it seems that games such as Mario Bros Wii and Sonic 4 will lead the way for some more to be resurrected (personally I would like to see a new version of Pandemonium.). So now we can all look forward to playing a Sonic game that takes us back to what secured the blue hedgehogs place in gaming history in the first place. Sonic 4: Episode 1 is due for release in the summer.

For now here is an exclusive and possibly illegal trailer!

Embrace the Darkside

THQ have announced a rather curious release of a demo for the Darksiders. The sales of Darksiders, originally released on 8th Jan in UK. have obviously not been as high as the developer may have hoped and I suspect this demo is being released to try to kick-start sales. So far opinion on the game has been divided kinda like Marmite and this slice of the game should give you enough of an idea which camp you fall into.

The demo contains the entire first dungeon encounter from the game, the sprawling Twilight Cathedral. This engaging and challenging level contains dozens of puzzles for players to solve, new pieces of equipment to discover and epic boss battles against the monstrous demon Jailer and the savage bat-winged Tiamat. Representing a cross-section of Darksiders’ key features, the demo will take approximately 90 minutes to complete for the average player and will be available to download from XBL and PSN on 25th February.

David Adams, General Manager of Vigil Games commented:
“We are really pumped to be bringing a playable demo for Darksiders to Xbox 360 and PlayStation3. We really wanted to give gamers a true idea of the variety of gameplay that the game offers and so rather than just making a standard 20-minute demo version of the first few levels, we decided to give away this massive level and reveal the true essence of the game.”

Whether this will spark sales is anybody’s guess but 90 minutes of free game is nothing to sniffed at and if successful it could spark similar post release demo versions of games that have potential but are not fulfilling their sales figures.

Miner Setback

News reaches us today of a delay in the launch of PC and XBL shooter Miner Wars. Originally scheduled for release at the end of 2009 the game has now been put back to “Late 2010” in order for the game to reach its full potential.

Miner Wars will feature some interesting features and if you are a PC owner the chance to pick the game up early and on the cheap, here is what they have said:

“Keen Software house has decided to take the following steps in order to release a product that the community of 6DOF gamers deserve.

1) We will start offering our game at a promotion pricing level that will be at roughly 1/3 of the final product price
2) All the players that will buy the game at this promotion pricing will get a full game with no extra charge on the day of release
3) Our promotion pricing will only be applied to the PC version of the game. Xbox360 release will feature a full game with future upgrades.
3) All the players interested to participate on this model will receive a release in these steps:

A) single-player beta featuring some basic features and missions
B) improved single-player beta with more features
C) single and multi-player beta access with some basic features
D) single and multi-player full game with all the features set to the date of release
E) Stable flow of upgrades for their full game

Miner Wars will feature:
– 6DOF
– Fully Destructible Environment
– Single Player Story & MMO
– Persistent open world – millions of km
– 15 mission types: Revenge, Mining, Harvesting, Defending, Exploration, Rescue and more
– High quality rendering

It all sounds pretty cool and it is certainly one to look out for.
