Second Hand Games

Recent industry rumours have been flying about like some kind of mutant bat-monkey.

These rumours appear to have sprung up after some off the cuff comments from Epic’s Mark Rein. Apparently second hand video game sales are stopping him from having more money than he already has, bless him and therefore he wants it stopped or he is going to tell his butler to stop it. On top of this Mr Rein wants a total ban on rentals also. Is he serious? Well he seems to be.

What constantly puzzles me is that games companies are forever looking for excuses as to why their games end up in the bargain or second hand bins. Well, maybe it is time for them to sit up and realise that perhaps, just perhaps if they were to turn out more decent titles with decent play times in the first place then maybe the average customer would be less inclined to trade them in.

On top of this the average consumer cannot afford to constantly fork out forty or as much fifty quid as some games now retail at. In fact, I would hazard a guess that for every five games exchanged at least two are games that would otherwise have been kept if the customer could have afforded to.

To add fuel to Mr Reins little fire there were plenty of rumours that Sony had initially considered making each game played in a PS3 code to that particular machine. This would mean that a game once played would have never played on any other machine, killing the second hand industry dead.

Luckily Sony moved quickly to dispel this rumour with Jennie Kong (great name!) the PR Manager for SCEE issuing this statement, “I would like to clarify that this is false speculation and that PlayStation 3 software will not be copy protected to a single machine but will be playable on any PlayStation 3 console.”

So good news for all of us, well except Mr Rein. Guess he will have to find another way to line his pockets. I would like suggest making more good games??

I think we should sell him and trade him in for some games! What the hell is that about? You don’t see Hollywood rushing to stop dvd rentals, do ya? Idiot.
