Game Of The Year 2010 – Best Online Games

Yes it is that time of the year again. The time when we look back on the releases we have all spent far too many hours in front of and decide which one will take the highly converted Game4Anything Game of The Year title. It is the one that all companies are after we assure you. 2010 has been a good year for G4A with the new site earning rave reviews from industry and readers alike. We have also grown in numbers this year with Eddie, Badger and Liam all joining the family. We have also shifted our focus slightly to bring you a more in-depth look at the world of PSN and XBLA whilst keeping you right-up-to-date with the biggest news and reviews as well. With that in mind this year we have two categories in this years G0TY awards. One for the full retail market and one for the online market as well.

This first Category is for the best online games of 2010. You can follow this link to the best Full Retail Games Chart.

10. The Undergarden

Like a telly tubby on acid or more acid is how Drew described the character in this serene and excellent game. Set underwater you have to pollinate the flowers to bring the world to life. A calming experience blessed with beautiful visuals and good music makes The Undergarden our first entry into the top ten.

9. Bomberman Blast

Only just released on XBLA but already a hit on Wii and always welcome is this latest sequel of the hugely successful Bomberman franchise. Featuring new weapons and tons of new levels whilst keeping the traditional Bomberman gameplay means that Bomberman Blast makes it to number 9 on our chart.

8. Costume Quest

One of our favourite DL games this year was the very funny and cute Costume Quest. Hailing from  Double Fine Studios this RPG adventure set on Halloween is a great family title for all ages. Some may feel it is a aimed at a younger audience but the excellent funny script kept us enthralled from start to end and easily earns its place in our top ten.

7. Dead Nation

Zombies, they are everywhere and Dead Nation has more than any other. There are simply hundreds of the little brain-eaters everywhere. Co-op play and lots of cool weapons added to cool graphics and mayhem gets Dead Nation into the top 10.

6. Joe Danger

Coming earlier in the year but making a big statement was Joe Danger. A harp back to the days of kickstart this daredevil game featuring online races is one of the very best titles to come for PSN this year and well deserving of its place at number six.

5. Blade Kitten

Sega’s first game in the Blade Kitten series was derided in some quarters but not here at G4A. This side-scrolling, beat-em-up/platformer was a real trip down memory lane. Featuring sumptuous cartoon graphics, good script, excellent voice-acting and nicely balanced gameplay this is a must for platform fans everywhere.

4. Limbo

Coming in at number 4 is the film noir classic Limbo. This eerie game featuring black and white visuals and creepy settings was an instant classic. Some devious puzzles and scary baddies will have you coming back for more and more.

Third Place Goes To

Comic Jumper

Another game that did not rate highly on some lesser sites was Comic Jumper. Twisted Pixel have built themselves a rep for crazy online titles and this was no different. We loved it, with its distinct blend of different comicbook art styles and fantastic comedy script this was certainly one of our favourite DL games of the year and worthy of its place at number 3.

Runner Up

Alien Breed – Trilogy

Team 17 have always been one of the mainstays of the UK gaming scene and when we heard that they were resurrecting Amiga classic Alien Breed we nearly wet ourselves. Luckily for us the three games (Impact, Assault and Descent.) in the series were all brilliant and we have decided to put them in as a single entry into our GoTY. Making Alien Breed our runner up in the Game of The Year.

The Game4Anything Online Game Of The Year

Lara Croft and The Guardian of Light

Just pipping Alien Breed to the top slot is Crystal Dynamics Lara Croft And The Guardian of Light. The first Lara game not to bear the Tomb Raider name took Lara into an isometric adventure in either single-player or co-op missions. A truly masterful display of game balance between action and platforming this is possibly the most faithful Tomb Raider game since the early titles. Excellent graphics and a compelling story make this our best DL game of the year!

So there you have it, another year of games passed and what a year it has been. We can only hope that 2011 brings us as many delights as 2010.
