Sony unveil PSP2 codename NGP

Sony unveil PSP2 codename NGP

So after weeks of speculation Sony has finally unveiled its follow-up to the PSP. Codenamed NGP (Next Generation Portable) the new machine boasts some impressive features yet still manages to look familiar.

Speaking at the unveiling in Tokyo SCE president Kaz Hirai claimed the NGP would provide users with “ultimate portable entertainment”. And he could be right when you consider that the videos shown of games such as Uncharted show the device is almost capable of PS3 style visuals.

As you can see from our images the NGP maintains the look of the original PSP yet adds tons of new features. Not only does it come with dual analogue thumbsticks but also both a touch-screen and rear touch-pad. It also has front and rear cameras and gyroscopic motion control similar to the Six-axis PS3 controllers.

The NGP features a 5″ that promises five times the resolution of the PSP and the device also features Bluetooth, 3G and WiFi connectivity.

The addition of all these new control methods should help with new gameplay styles but more impressively the machine does actually seem capable of producing near PS3 quality gaming in the palm of your hand. As you can imagine there is a whole host of developers clamouring to produce games for the PSP2. Already confirmed is a new Call Of Duty, Wipeout, Uncharted, Monster Hunter Portable 3, Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet to name but few.

Overall the machine is looking pretty good and Gamespot have a video of the machine running Uncharted and to save you time we have embedded it here.

And here is a gallery of images of the new machine.
