Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles – Zen Studios

Anyone who follows Game4Anything on a regular basis (you know who you are, yes you there! Stop licking that window!) will know that we are very fond of Zen Studio’s Pinball FX2. It will also come as no surprise that we are big fans of Marvel and their merry band of Superheroes. Having already added the Marvel Pinball tables to their impressive collection, the people at Zen now bring us Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles. The new game consists of four tables, Avengers, World War Hulk, The Infinity Gauntlet and Fear Itself. Each table now tells a story from a specific event from the Avengers Chronicles universe. Turning the attention to story-driven events rather than specific characters adds a new dimension to the tables and one that certainly enhances the experience and each table is unique in its own right.

The Avengers table is one that most fans will be familiar with as it follows the storyline of the blockbuster film Avengers Assemble. The table features  a unique ball for each of the avengers, Black Widow, Captain America, Hawkeye, Hulk, Iron Man and Thor. You can chose which avenger you wish to be at the start of each turn. The table is also set out like Hellicarrier with the four turbofans in each corner of the table.  Of course no Superhero is complete without a nemesis and Loki appears as one of the 3D characters that make the Pinball FX tables stand out from the crowd. This table features some great moments including one excellent set-piece when one of the giant engines catches fire and you have to race to fix it.

World War Hulk follows a perhaps less familiar story-line that has seen Hulk banished into space by the illuminati. He has now returned to Manhattan to  seek revenge and wage war against the X-Men, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four and Doctor Strange. This table features 11 lanes and some excellent set pieces, like opening up a mini-table of Maddison Square Garden. And of course it features Hulk smashing the crap out of everything, what more needs to be said?

The Infinity Gauntlet features Marvel baddie Thanos, that’s him that pops up at the end of the Avengers Assemble movie. Adam Warlock and the Silver Surfer battle it out to recover the six Infinity Gems (Time, Space, Reality, Power, Mind, Soul). Each Infinity Gem produces a special effect on the table including literally flipping it upside down. If you thought Pinball FX was confusing at the best of times, you ain’t seen anything yet!
This table features over 139 lines of dialogue making it the most story-driven table on Pinball FX2 to date.

Finally it is the Fear Itself table. Featuring the Asgardian god, Serpent as chief nasty and our heroic Avengers are there once again to foil his evil plan. This table is riddled with mini-games, and strange magnetic ball physics that will see you balls moving in ways that will make your eyes water (oh I say!).

So Zen Studios have pulled out all the stops to make MPAC a new and unique experience but what do the story driven aspects really mean to the way the game plays. Well, not a lot if truth be told. Ultimately it is Pinball and that is the crux of the matter. You still hit balls around the table and rack up scores. Yes these tables are excellent and each offers different challenges, but I would offer a word of warning. The more stuff that is thrown at you on the screen the more confusing these tables become. That is not to say that these are not excellent additions to the Pinball FX2 table roster, they are only that with every new release Zen Studios are cramming more and more stuff into the tables and my fear is that they will become over-complicated and lose the very essence of what makes them fun. However, for now these tables do offer new experiences and some great moments, so add them to your table roster as soon as you can.
